Basic hygiene practices are usually taken for granted in the Western world. In Cambodia, many people don’t know the benefits of properly washing their hands and brushing their teeth. At Human and Hope Association we regularly hold hygiene workshops, thanks to the resources provided to us by Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC).
The training sessions focus on basic hygiene practices such as hand-washing and teeth cleaning. Awareness is also raised about the dangers of using contaminated water as a cause of illness and disease, as well as how people can change their everyday routine to prevent getting sick. The workshops utilise engaging training materials and activities. A small hygiene pack is provided to every student who attends the training so they could put their learning into practice straight away.
In addition to this, we provide a bio-sand water filter in our study area so our students have access to clean drinking water when they are at school.
He first came to class with no shoes and very dirty clothes. His face, body, and teeth were also dirty. Our staff asked him and he replied, “I sometimes didn’t take a bath and I had never brushed my teeth.” Understanding this, our staff talked to his mother to encouraged him to take a bath every day and buy shoes for him.
With the support from his mother and his participating in hygiene lessons such as teeth brushing and hand washing in class, slowly but surely, Las started wearing good clothes, brushing his teeth each morning with us, and his body wasn’t dirty anymore. Now he has a toothbrush and toothpaste at home so that he can brush his teeth at home, too.
