Meet our Community: Sophan

Sophan spending time in the study area at HHA.

Meet *Sophan, an eight-year-old girl who lives near HHA Cambodia’s community centre. Her parents work hard to make ends meet, with her mother raising chickens to sell and her father working as a builder. They earn just enough to cover their basic living expenses.

Sophan's older sister was a beneficiary of HHA’s preschool program, and two years ago, Sophan joined the Khmer language class. After a home assessment, she was granted a scholarship and has been receiving mentoring and school supplies from HHA’s education team ever since.

Currently, Sophan is studying in HHA’s upper Khmer and beginner English classes. Thanks to the supplementary Khmer classes, she has been able to excel in public school, where she consistently ranks in the top three of her class.

Sophan is always early to HHA’s community centre, where she enjoys reading in the library or studying in the dedicated study area. In her spare time, she helps her parents with chores, plays with her friends, and looks after her sister and the family’s chickens.

Sophan shares that she loves learning Khmer at HHA and spending time with her classmates. Her favorite activity is reading storybooks in the library. When she grows up, she aspires to be a Khmer teacher at public school.

With the support of HHA's education programs and her own determination, Sophan is well on her way to achieving her dreams. Your donation can help more children like Sophan receive the education and resources they need to thrive.
