Vocational Training Programs

Sewing Program

Our sewing program focuses on assisting the poorest members of our community who struggle to make ends meet. We carefully select our students after conducting assessments over several weeks to determine their suitability for the program.

Our students attend the sewing program for three hours each day, five days a week. In addition to their studies, they maintain a garden at Human and Hope Association and receive a stipend of rice and vegetables to ensure their families are well-fed. On Mondays, they participate in life skills classes, covering topics such as domestic violence, marriage laws, anger management, job skills, and hygiene.

Over the ten-month program, students learn various sewing techniques, including how to use a sewing machine, different stitches, and how to make clothing items such as school uniforms, traditional attire, and women's and men's clothing.

After three months in the program, students may take out a microfinance loan to purchase a sewing machine for practice at home. They then begin making and repairing clothes for their neighbors, with loan repayments beginning six months after receiving the machine to ensure they are comfortable with their skills and not under pressure to repay their loans immediately.

Upon completion of the program, graduates possess a diverse set of skills, enabling them to seek employment in sewing shops, operate their own sewing businesses from home, or work for us to produce goods for a fair wage. We also offer monthly workshops and refresher lessons for six months after graduation to help students maintain their skills.

HOPE Sewing Enterprise

HOPE Sewing Enterprise was formally registered as a social enterprise in 2022 after almost a decade of running a sewing business as part of our charity.

This enterprise empowers our graduates to create sustainable futures for themselves. We make bespoke products for shops in Cambodia and create tailored uniforms for schools and businesses. Our products are sold online in Australia through our fundraising partner.
