Meet our Community: Sokha

Sokha at our community centre.

Meet *Sokha, a 10-year-old girl from a rural area of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Sokha's parents work hard to provide for their family, but their income is limited. Sokha's life changed when she came to the attention of HHA in 2018.

Our education team discovered Sokha playing with her sister and friends on the road. After conducting a home assessment, they offered Sokha the opportunity to join their preschool program, which her parents eagerly accepted.

On her first day of school, Sokha was very anxious and struggled to be away from her mother. However, after a month, she started to feel more comfortable and began to play and learn with her peers. With support from her teacher and mother, Sokha's confidence grew, and she started to speak and play with her classmates.

Thanks to our preschool program, Sokha gained knowledge in various areas, including the Khmer alphabet and numbers. She also learned good hygiene practices, like washing her hands and brushing her teeth. Now in fifth grade, Sokha has completed HHA's Khmer class and moved to their introductory English class. The strong foundation from our program has helped Sokha earn good grades in public school.

In her free time, Sokha enjoys playing with friends, visiting family, and reading books. She dreams of becoming a nurse when she grows up.

Your support will help provide preschool programs, language classes, and other essential services to children and families in need.
