Vuon’s Story

Vuon with the rice she harvested.

We believe that the best way to support our community is to work alongside them and provide an empowering environment to make a lasting change.

One of our success stories is that of Vuon, a 45-year-old farmer and grocery seller from a rural village in Siem Reap. Before COVID-19, she was able to make a living by selling groceries at home and growing rice in her fields. However, when the pandemic hit, her business suffered, leaving her family in debt and making it impossible for her to obtain money for her rice growing.

This is where Human and Hope Association came in. By working with the village chief, we were able to identify Vuon and provide her with the support she needed. We interviewed her to assess her situation, needs, and background, and then we admitted her into our rice loan project.

As part of the project, we provided her with hands-on training on rice cultivation and financial management. After completing the courses, we gave her a loan of $200. We followed up with her a few times over the following four months to make sure her rice cultivation was going smoothly.

In April this year, Vuon was able to harvest her rice with a noticeably increased yield. She received four tons and 700 kg this year, an increase of 500 kg from the prior year. She was thrilled with the result and was willing to continue taking the loan to improve her life and the lives of her family members.

Vuon's story is just one of the many examples of how Human and Hope Association is helping communities in Siem Reap. Our locally-led approach ensures that we work with the community members to understand their needs and provide them with the necessary support. By providing an empowering environment, we help break the cycle of poverty and enable them to build a better future for themselves and their families.

We believe that locally-led development is important because it allows the community members to take ownership of their own development. When they are involved in the process, they feel a sense of pride and responsibility. They are more likely to take action and make a lasting change. This approach also ensures that the solutions are tailored to the community's needs and culture, making them more effective and sustainable.

We encourage everyone to support our charity, Human and Hope Association. Your support will help us continue our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education, vocational training, and community development initiatives. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of communities in Siem Reap.
